MARK 6:1-7
LUKE 4:14-29
When Jesus returned from the wilderness by the
strength of the
Holy Spirit,
after being tempted, He went into Galilee and a
fame of Him spread throughout the land. He taught in their synagogues
and all the people glorified Him. This fulfills the prophecy of
Isaiah 9:1
and
Deuteronomy 18:15.
Then Jesus went to Nazareth, where He grew up. He
went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read. They
gave Him the book of Isaiah and He read aloud ( Isaiah
61:1): The
Spirit of the Lord
is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach
the gospel to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance
to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty
them that are bruised, and to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
All eyes were fixed on Jesus as He then closed the
book, gave it back to the minister and sat down. He said to the
people, Today, this scripture is fulfilled in your ears. Meaning that
what He had just read, was upon them. That HE was who Isaiah was
talking about in that scripture.
All the people that were watching were surprised at
the gracious Words that He spoke and they said to one another, Isn't
this Joseph's son? They doubted that HE could be who HE said HE was
because they knew Him as a child growing up there. Jesus said to them,
You will certainly say to me this saying, Physician, heal yourself.
The things we've heard that you've done in Galilee, do also here in
your own country (hometown). He was saying that they were probably
requiring miracles to be done.
Jesus said, Truly I say to you, No prophet is
believed in his own country. But I'll tell you the truth, many widows
were in Israel in the days of
Elijah
when it didn't rain for 3 ½ years and great famine swept the land, but
Elijah was only sent to one widow, in Sidon. And many lepers were in
Israel in the time of
Elisha
the prophet, but none of them were cleansed, except Naaman, the
Syrian.
When the people in the synagogue heard this, they
were filled with anger. They got up and threw Jesus out of the city
and led Him to the edge of the hill that Nazareth was built on so they
could push Him off. Jesus made His way through the middle of the
people and went His way.
What was Jesus telling those people from His home
town? Someone once said it this way: "Why is it that people praise
dead saints but persecute the living ones?" People find it hard to
believe that prophets exist in modern times, but ask yourself this.
When do you think God stopped making prophets? Maybe there's one in
your own home country, but you just find it hard to believe because
after all, it couldn't possibly be. Maybe you are experiencing this.
Maybe God has called you but those around you (family and friends)
just can't believe that YOU could be HIS servant and called to share
TRUTH because, after all, they KNOW you. Do they really KNOW you?
Think about it.
