the conclusion of this Old Testament story about the tribe of Benjamin? It's
very interesting.
Now, when it was all done and
over with, the children of Israel were very sorry for what had happened and
that one of the tribes of Israel was almost expelled from existence, so they
made an oath, that they would all go to the house of the Lord in Mizpeh and
offer burnt offerings and peace offerings, but any who didn't attend would
be put to death.
It was also quite a concern as to
how the remaining Benjamites (the 600 men in refuge at the rock Rimmon in
the wilderness) would get wives, since they had all sworn that none would
give the Benjamites their daughters in marriage.

Well, this is how they worked it
out. Nobody from Jabesh-Gilead came to the house of the Lord in Mizpeh for
the offerings, so they sent 12,000 of the strongest men of Israel to utterly
destroy every male and all women except virgins or Jabesh-Gilead. They
brought back 400 virgins and then sent messengers with tidings of peace to
the men in hiding at the rock and encouraged them to return to their land of
inheritance and gave them the 400 women for wives.
As for the remaining 200 who were
without wives, the people of Israel would not go back on their oath not to
give their daughters to the men of Benjamin, so this is what they did. There
was a certain feast once a year in Shiloh where the Tabernacle and the Ark
of the Covenant were, so they allowed the Benjamites to steal themselves
wives from the daughters of Shiloh by hiding in the vineyards and waiting
for the young women to come out to dance in celebration of the feast, then
catching a wife and taking her to the land of Benjamin.

And they agreed that if anyone
complained, they would be told to be gracious because Israel failed to save
these men's' wives. So the remaining 200 Benjamites did steal themselves
wives and returned home and repaired their cities, and the tribe of Benjamin
was no longer in danger of being removed from existence in Israel.
