Welcome back to our Daily Bread Old
Testament study of the book of Joshua. It was mentioned briefly in the
last chapter that the kings of the west side of Jordan were banding
together to defend themselves against Israel. And hearing that Gibeon
made peace with Israel, they declared war on Gibeon.
The people of Gibeon asked
Israel to come and help defend them, because although Gibeon was a large
city and strong, they feared because there were five kings that had
gathered their armies against them.

BIBLE SUMMARY
The Lord told Joshua not to
be afraid, because again, He had delivered them into Joshua's hand, and
they slaughtered them with a great defeat. As they ran from Israel, God
rained down huge hail stones on them, and more were crushed by the hail,
than died with the sword.
That day Joshua asked the
Lord, in the presence of the children of Israel, for the sun and the
moon to stand still, and they did, for about a whole day. Why did he ask
this? So that the night might not come on too soon and be an obstruction
to the zeal of the Hebrews in pursuing their enemies. That had never
happened before, nor since.
Just a little note ... Check out verse
13:
|
Joshua 10:13
And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had
avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the
book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and
hasted not to go down about a whole day. |
One might assume from this
verse that Jasher is a person, but this is actually referring to the
book of the "upright" ... Or the book of the law.
An important thing to
remember about the conquest of Canaan, is that the Lord hardened the
hearts of the heathen in the land to challenge the children of Israel in
battle, so that Joshua could destroy them completely and without mercy,
just as the Lord commanded Moses (Deuteronomy
20:16).

STOOD STILL IN THE BIBLE DISCUSSION
As for the five kings, they
hid themselves in a cave and when Joshua learned of it, he put them to
death. After that, Joshua and the children of Israel had a series of
victories through the country of the hills and of the south and of the
valley and of the springs, and then they returned to the camp at Gilgal.
Don't miss the next chapter
as we learn about even more victories for Joshua and the children of
Israel, right here at Daily Bread.
