OF RAHAB IN THE BIBLE STUDY MESSAGE
Welcome again to our
Daily Bread study of the book of Joshua. Last time we studied
together, Joshua was preparing the
children of Israel to enter into the Promised Land within three days.
You may remember when Joshua himself was sent by Moses to spy out the
land. Well, Joshua also sent two men out to spy on the city of Jericho,
which would be the first city that the children of Israel would
encounter once they crossed the Jordan.
The spies lodged in
the house of an harlot named Rahab. The king of Jericho was informed of
the spies by someone, so the king sent a message to Rahab, to bring out
the men that were staying there, because they were spies. But Rahab hid
them, and cleverly told the king's messengers, Some men did indeed happen
by, but I didn't know where they were from. When it grew dark, they left
and I didn't know where they went, but if you hurry, you'll probably
catch them.

BIBLE STUDY EVENTS SUMMARY
So the king's
messengers left, and once they were well gone, Rahab went to the roof
where she had carefully hidden the spies and said, I know that the Lord
has given you the land and that everyone in the land fears you. We heard
how the Lord dried up the Red Sea for you and destroyed Sihon and Og
(the two kings of the Amorites). When we heard these things, our hearts
melted and every man lost his courage because of you, because the Lord
your God, He is God in Heaven above and in Earth beneath. Now I beg you
please, swear to me by the Lord, since I have shown you kindness, that
you will also show kindness to my father's house (family) and save all
of our lives.
The spies agreed and
Rahab let them down from the roof by a rope out the window and told them
to hide in the mountain for three days until the king's men would return
and then it would be safe to go their way. The spies gave Rahab a line
of scarlet thread to tie in her window to mark the place where Israel
was to save Rahab and her family, and told her to bring all of her
family into her home, but if any left her house, they would not be
responsible for them. They also warned that if she told anyone their
business, all deals would be off. Rahab agreed to all. The spies left
and she tied the red thread in the window.

The spies remained
in the mountains for three days, then returned to Joshua and told him
everything that had happened. They told him that the Lord had truly
delivered all the land into their hands, because all the people of the
country fear them.
