CHAPTER 21

FAMINE BIBLE STUDY
Good day! Glad to have you back! In
our last Daily Bread, a man named Sheba tried to lead Israel away from king
David, even before he reached Jerusalem. David gave Amasa three days to gather
the troops in Judah to go find Sheba, but since he delayed in reporting back to
David, he sent Abishai out with the men that were on hand to start the search.
Amasa caught up with them in Gibeon but out of jealousy, Joab killed Amasa, then
he and Abishai and the rest of David's men sought Sheba out discovering him in the city of Abel, where the people of that city took matters into
their own hands. To avoid destruction of the city, they captured Sheba, cut off
his head and threw it over the city wall to Joab, and once again, Joab sounded
the trumpet and everyone returned home. Now let's find out
what happened next.

For three years during the reign of
king David, there was a famine. David asked the Lord why it was happening. The
Lord answered, “It was for Saul and his bloody house because he killed the Gibeonites. The Gibeonites weren't
kindred of Israel but kin of the Amorites. The children of Israel made a league
with them and swore not to kill
them back in the days of Joshua (Joshua
9:15), but Saul, during his reign as king, sought to kill them.
There are couple of FYI
notes about the first two verses of this chapter that are interesting. First of
all, Joshua
9:7 indicates that the inhabitants of Gibeon were Hivites, whereas
2 Samuel
21:2 indicates that they were Amorites. Secondly, you won't find a specific
account of this incident in the Bible about Saul's attack on the Gibeonites,
Hivites or Amorites ... That isn't to say that it didn't happen, but it just
isn't recorded. Now, back to business.
King David called the Gibeonites and
said to them, “How can I make peace between us so the
Lord will bless His people again?” The Gibeonites answered, “We don’t want anything that
belonged to Saul or for you to kill any one in Israel.” The king said, “Whatever
you ask, I will do for you.” They said, “Bring us seven sons (meaning sons,
grandsons, or other near of kin) of the man who
tried to destroy us. We’ll hang them for the Lord in Gibeah. The king agreed.
But because David made a promise to Jonathan before the Lord, he spared his son, Mephibosheth.
Now, let's take a close
look at verse 8 and 9, shall we?

But the king took the
two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni
and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom
she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite: And he
delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in
the hill before the LORD: and they fell all seven together, and were put
to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of
barley harvest. |
From this scripture, it's
apparent that not only did Jonathan
have a son named Mephibosheth, but a brother
as well. Also, for a reason never mentioned, Michal, Saul's daughter and David's
wife, raised her sister Merab's five sons ...

But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have
been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to
wife. |
... As you may remember,
Michal could
have no children:

Samuel 6:23
Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her
death. |

So in truth, these seven 'sons' of
Saul, were actually two so ns
and five grandsons. David turned
them over to the Gibeonites and they hanged them on the hill before the Lord at the
beginning of barley harvest.
Rizpah, a concubine of Saul's and the
mother of two of his sons
that were hung, took sackcloth, spread it on the ground, and sat on it day and
night from
the beginning of harvest until it rained to keep the birds and beasts off of the
bodies.
David heard what Rizpah did and he
went to Jabesh-Gilead and got the bones of Saul and Jonathan (1
Samuel 31:12-13), and gathered the bones of Saul’s
sons and grandsons that were just hung, and took them all to the country of
Benjamin and buried them in the tomb of Kish, Saul's father. After that, God answered the
prayers to end the famine in the land.
Once again, however, Israel went to
war with the Philistines. David went out to battle with the army, but he grew
weak. Now there was a Philistine named Ishbibenob, who was the son of the giant.
His spear weighed more than seven pounds and was armed with a new sword. Ishbibenob
was planning to kill David, But Abishai came and rescued him and killed the
Philistine giant.
David’s men swore to him that he
wouldn’t go out to battle again because if anything happened to him, they would
no longer enjoy the blessings that they would surely receive from God if he
lived a long life as their king.
After that, there was another battle
with Philistines at Gob, and Saph, also a son of the giant was killed by
Sibbechai the Hushathite. Then there
was yet another battle in Gob with the Philistines, and Goliath’s brother was
killed then by Elhanan a Bethlehemite. Still another battle was fought in Gath. There was a giant
there that
had six fingers on each hand, and six toes on each foot. When he defied Israel,
Jonathan, David’s nephew killed him.

These four giants were all born to the
giant in Gath ... All were the brothers of
Goliath from Gath who David brought down with a sling and a stone and then
killed with Goliath’s
own spear.
So the famine has ended, and four
sons of the giant are no longer a
threat to Israel.
