THE SECOND BOOK OF SAMUEL
CHAPTER 11
DAVID AND BATHSHEBA BIBLE STORY
Good day to you, and welcome back
to Daily Bread!
The last time we met to study together, we watched David defeat the Syrians.
Today, is a different story. A story that changed the course of David's life in
certain respects.
DAVID AND BATHSHEBA BIBLE STORY
ON DAVID AND BATHSHEBA BIBLE STORY EVENTS WITH DAVID AND BATHSHEBA BIBLE STORY
MESSAGE
When the year ended and it was time
for the kings to go to war, David sent Joab and his army and they destroyed the
Ammonites and attacked Rabbah. But David stayed in Jerusalem.
Daily Bread Crumb time! It sounds
like there was a time of year set aside for battle. Now why would that be? One
might suppose a few different reasons. Weather is one thing that comes to
mind. Remember back in the days of the judges when Deborah ruled in Israel?
The rain was a big problem for Sisera, who counted on his many chariots as a
source of his army’s strength but mud is a devastating circumstance when you
rely on chariots as your strength. Cold might be another drawback when going to
battle, as obviously any soldier could be more effective in a comfortable
climate. The heat of summer in any of the desert wilderness areas would also
pose a problem for troops traveling from one location to another, as well as
keeping food from spoiling in the heat or keeping thousands of soldiers hydrated
would.
At either rate …
One evening, while the army of Israel
was out to battle, David got up and walked
out on the roof of his house. From the roof he saw a beautiful woman bathing in
her home.
David sent someone to find out who she was. “She is Bathsheba,
the wife of Uriah, the Hittite,” he was told. David sent for her and and when she came to David,
he laid with her, and she returned home.
When she found out she was pregnant, she sent and told David.
David, just like many people, yielded to
the temptation of sin. Instead of fighting the temptation, he entertained the
thought and acted on it.
DAVID AND BATHSHEBA BIBLE STORY LESSON WITH DAVID AND BATHSHEBA BIBLE STORY EXPLANATION
If you find yourself struggling with
this kind of thing, here are a couple of studies that you may want to read the
studies at the end of this page.
Stay with me now … This story is FAR from over …
David called for Joab and told him,
“Send me Uriah, the Hittite. So Joab summoned
Uriah and
brought him to see David. David asked Uriah how things were going with the army
and how the war was progressing. He then sent Uriah home to relax. When Uriah
left with a gift of food from David, he didn't go home. He stayed
and slept at the palace doors with other servants.
When David found out, he asked Uriah,
“Why didn’t you go home after being away for so long?
Uriah replied, “The ark, and armies of
Israel and Judah are sleeping in tents. My commander Joab and your servants are
sleeping in open fields outside. How can I go into my house, eat, drink, and
sleep with my wife when they can’t do the same thing? I swear, I won't do
such a thing.
So David said to Uriah, “Stay
here today as well and tomorrow I will let you return.” So Uriah stayed in
Jerusalem that day and the next. David had Uriah over for a meal and tried to
get him drunk, but Uriah still wouldn't go inside his house ... But slept with
the servants.
David knew he had sinned. But instead
of running to God and repenting, he tried to fix the situation himself … Making
things far worse. His goal was to have Uriah sleep with Bathsheba and then he
could be off the hook. When that didn’t work, David took more extreme actions …
DAVID AND BATHSHEBA BIBLE STORY INFORMATION WITH DAVID AND
BATHSHEBA BIBLE STORY MEANING
The following morning, David wrote a
letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. The letter told Joab to place Uriah in
the front line of the hottest battle so he would die. So Joab assigned Uriah to the place
where he knew the strongest of the enemy's men were fighting against them. As
the battle continued, some of David's men were killed, including Uriah.
Then Joab sent a report to David about
the war. He told the messenger, “After you report to David about the war, if he
asks ‘Why did you get so close to that city, didn't you know that
they'd shoot from the wall? Wasn’t Abimelech, killed by a woman throwing a
stone on him from the wall in Thebez? (Remember that story from
Judges
9:50-54?) Why did you go so close to the
wall?’ Then tell him, ‘Your servant, Uriah, has died also.’”
So the messenger went and told David everything Joab
told him to say. He told David, “The enemy came out against us in the fields
and at the gates. And the shooters shot our men from the wall and killed some
of our men, including Uriah.”
Then David told the messenger to tell
Joab, “Don’t be discouraged over this. The sword can kill anyone. Just fight
harder against the city and overtake them!”
When Bathsheba heard that her husband
had died, she mourned. When she finished mourning, David sent for her to come
to his house and she became his wife and bore a son. But with what David had done, the Lord
was displeased.
Wondering what’s gonna happen next? Wondering how the Lord
will respond? Come back
soon and we'll discover those answers together, right here at Daily Bread!
