Now back to our question. How do we use the gift of love that the Holy Spirit gives to us? Because love is a spiritual gift, it’s difficult for most people to put the definition of love into words. In fact, many people confuse love with other feelings and fleshly desires.

          Paul, on the other hand, isn’t like most people, and he doesn’t have any trouble at all describing what love is. While you read, examine the love that you give and receive in your life and answer these questions for yourself, How do I put the spiritual gift of love to work in my life? Am I faithful to love? In other words, Do I cheat myself or others by choosing to abide by only certain responsibilities of love, and not others? And while you’re answering that one, keep this in mind,

          Now, let’s join Paul for the answer to the age old question, What is love?

If I spoke in different languages of men and even of angels,
without love,
my voice would be like that of a clanging cymbal.
And I may have the gift of prophecy,
and understand all the mysteries of heaven,
and know all the knowledge of the earth,
and though I may have so much Faith that I could move mountains,
without love,
I am nothing.
And I may give all that I own to feed the poor,
and I may give my body to be burned,
but if I have no love,
it profits me nothing.

          I’m going to write the next several verses exactly as Paul wrote them on the left and on the right, is how we would say it in our modern language. Sometimes, the way things were worded when King James translated the Bible back in the 1600’s is just too lovely not to include.

          This is the real, spiritual gift of Love. If everyone you loved, and everyone who loves you, followed this definition of love that Paul describes, wouldn’t you find it easier to love? Wouldn’t you find it easier not to modify love yourself? What do you think ... If you take away even one of the things in the definition, is it love anymore? Also, did you notice that Paul never used the words “sometimes” or “most of the time” in his recollection of what the Holy Spirit told him to teach about what love is.

          Here’s an interesting observation. Love seeketh not “her” own. Love is spoken of in the feminine form because it is soft, it is gentle, it is meek.

          You may want to print this out, cut out the little boxes with Paul’s definition of love in them, and memorize it, because if this is something that works with your other spiritual gifts to enhance them, it’s a very good thing to remember.

Love never fails, but where there are prophecies,
they shall fail;
Where there be tongues,
they shall cease;
where there is knowledge,
it shall vanish away.
Because we can never have a perfect conception of knowledge or prophecy.

          Remember, a few chapters ago, Paul said, whoever thinks he knows something, doesn’t know anything like he ought to know, so if your gift is knowledge or prophecy, humanly, you cannot know it all. Did you know that we can’t fully comprehend this spiritual gift of love while we’re still mortal? Paul explains:

When I was a child, I talked as a child,
I felt as a child, I reasoned as a child:
but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

And now remains Faith, Hope, Love,
these three;
but the greatest of these is love.

          This may be a great time to have a little private meeting with your conscience and brush up on any qualities of love that you may have been leaving out. If you claim to love, you’re responsible for the whole package, and the rewards you’ll get for investing in your spiritual gift of love will definitely make a positive change in your life, because you’ll not only be enhancing the other spiritual gifts that you receive from the Holy Ghost, but you’ll also be honoring God’s greatest commandments.
